Loading and glazing are two of the most common reasons a grinding wheel suddenly stops cutting well on ceramic. Both begin with chips that stay where they should not, and both end with higher heat, higher force and more edge chipping. Recognising the warning signs early keeps the process under control and protects the brittle ceramic edge.
When ceramic swarf enters the working layer of the wheel and cannot escape in time, it occupies the chip space between the diamond grits. The working face gradually becomes shiny as the pores fill with debris and the exposed grit loses its sharp edges. Cutting ability falls, and as a result both the grinding resistance and the local temperature rise.
A common reaction to a wheel that will not cut is to push harder and increase the feed. In ceramic grinding this usually makes things worse. Once the working face is loaded or glazed, extra feed cannot restore productivity; instead it drives up force and heat, and makes ceramic chipping and surface damage more likely.

Dressing restores the wheel, but prevention keeps it cutting. Match grit and bond to the ceramic and the finish required, keep coolant flow directed into the grinding zone to flush swarf away, and keep feed and depth of cut within the range the wheel can clear. A resin bond diamond wheel that stays open and sharp keeps heat low, which both reduces ceramic chipping and delays loading. Regular inspection of the working face turns a sudden defect into a planned, low-cost dressing stop.
Loading and glazing are not just cosmetic changes on the wheel face. They reduce cutting ability, raise grinding resistance and temperature, and directly worsen edge chipping and surface damage in ceramic work. The right response is not to push harder, but to check the face, dress the wheel correctly, and then review grit, bond, cooling and chip evacuation so the problem does not come straight back. Managed this way, wheel condition becomes a controllable variable instead of a surprise source of scrap.
