A very common assumption on the shop floor is that if the new wheel has exactly the same bore diameter as the old one, it will mount without any runout. In practice a bore is only one of several inputs to mounting accuracy. Radial runout and face runout after mounting are the result of the whole mounting stack — the wheel, the flange, the spindle and everything in between — and any weak point in that chain will show up as vibration at the grinding point.
The bore defines the theoretical axis of the wheel. It does not define how that axis will line up with the machine spindle, and it says nothing about the flatness of the faces that seat against the flange. A wheel with a perfectly sized bore can still run out noticeably if the locating surfaces are contaminated, if the flange is worn, or if the wheel has not been seated consistently. Understanding this difference is what separates a guess from a diagnosis.
| No. | Factor | Typical Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fit condition between bore and locating feature | Clearance or interference shifts the wheel axis relative to the spindle axis |
| 2 | Cleanliness of the flange faces | Swarf, oil film or burrs tilt the wheel on its seat |
| 3 | Condition of the spindle and locating face | Wear, runout or damage in the machine itself is transferred directly to the wheel |
| 4 | Contamination on the mounting faces | A single chip can produce measurable face runout |
| 5 | Condition of flanges, gaskets and blotting paper | Worn or deformed clamping parts create uneven clamping pressure |
| 6 | Consistency of the locating position during mounting | Different seating from one mounting to the next makes results unrepeatable |
| 7 | Geometric condition of the wheel itself | Inherent flatness and concentricity limits of the wheel body |
Before a new wheel goes onto the machine, cleaning the spindle, the flange and all related locating faces is the single most cost-effective step available. A thin film of oil, a smear of grinding swarf or a tiny burr on a flange face is enough to lift the wheel a few hundredths of a millimetre at one point, and that lift reappears as face runout at the wheel periphery. Because the effect is multiplied by the wheel radius, small seating errors become large displacement at the grinding zone — often diagnosed as a "bad wheel" when the wheel was never at fault.
Bore matching is a useful first filter, but it should never be the end of the incoming check. Treating cleaning and runout measurement as a fixed part of every wheel change turns mounting from an operator-dependent skill into a repeatable process: fewer dressing cycles, longer wheel life, more consistent surface finish and far less time spent chasing vibration that originated in a dirty flange rather than in the abrasive product. Suppliers can support this by providing clear mounting guidance, recommended clamping values and runout tolerances with every delivery.
